Bask (short for "Baskerville," as in the hound thereof) is a black lab, coonhound cross of some sort. There may be some German Shorthair Pointer in there too...Bask was found by the side of the road in Auburn NY, with a very broken left front leg (radius/ulna). The local pound brought him to Allan for initial treatment. When no one claimed him after seven days, I took him home.
Bask enjoys chasing things, licking things, and being crazy. His pursuits have induced some moderate craziness in the rest of the Berger household. He challenges Jenn's training abilities on a fairly frequent basis. At 75 pounds, Bask is the smallest of the Berger Family Dogs.
Jaxson is Jenn's hunting and obedience dog. Jaxson is a slightly over-sized Golden Retriever (dark red variety, occasionally misidentified as an Irish Setter by people who don't know better). Jaxson is a trained retriever (Jenn has spent many hours working with him), and he brings back all sorts of things that we really don't want but have to praise him for retrieving anyway.
In addition to retrieving, Jaxson also knows some search and rescue. He even has an ID card as an adjunct member of the Varna Volunteer Fire Company.
Joey was a Harlequin Great Dane, and he passed away in December, 1998 at the age of 12. Great Dane Rescue of Pennsylvania found him at a dog pound, and asked Jenn if she was interested in adopting him. They told her that Joey was no longer wanted by his family, and was 7 years old. When Jenn went to pick him up, she was told he was 10 years old (and it didn't take her that long to drive there).
Joey was an all around great dog. We don't know how anyone could have given him up. At 140 pounds, Joey was the largest of the Berger Family Dogs. We miss him. Also of note: Joey was the subject of Jenn's first GDV (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus) surgery in 1997.
Tasha is another Great Dane rescue. Tasha hails from Milwalkee, but she outgrew her apartment there. So, after going through a string of foster homes, Jenn took her. Tasha is about two years old. Other than being bouncy and sometimes silly, she has been remarkably well behaved. Tasha has big airplane ears (which are better than the scarred, cropped ears that Joey has), but they sometimes get in the way. It was difficult to get a photograph in which neither ear was inside-out. We believe Tasha is unique in that she loves to fetch and retrieve!
